Sharing Sunday: Hope for hearts that betray

As our pastor led us through John 18 on Sunday, we observed a man who followed Christ with passion.

Betrayed him vehemently.

And was restored.

Peter.

Through his living with Christ, Peter’s faith had grown.

Journeying with Jesus had created a  water-walking fisher of men.

And even so, an adamant denial of knowing Him seemed to roll off his tongue and spill impulsively from his heart.

Peter then denied again.

And immediately a rooster crowed.  (John 18:27)

And now an opportunity for Jesus to offer soothing restoration.

Hope offered to those of us who fall.

Jesus said him to the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was grieved that He should ask him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things.  You know that I love You.”

He said to Peter, “Feed my sheep.”  (John 21:17)

And wasn’t it Peter – this defender who fought, fell and was later Spiritually fortified – who went on to preach the first Spirit-filled sermon of the New Testament.

Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”

Then Peter said until them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized.

And the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  (Acts 2:37-38, 41)

Lives changed by this impulsive fisherman.

A man willing to receive forgiveness.

And a refreshing example of restoration and grace.

God can use the fierce and following heart, even one that betrays, to ignite passion in the souls of thousands.

    Kudos to Caleb and you.

I was over at Scribing the Journey today and Duane told about how Christ offered him hope and that he still holds onto that. Reading about how Christ brought Peter back into the fold after all he had done during the darkest days of Christ’s ministry does the same thing for me. That story gives me hope and I hold onto that. This post resonated with me.
